JANESVILLE — The city council unanimously voted Monday to approve an ordinance change that allows backyard ducks.
The ordinance allows residents the ability to keep domestic ducks under the same regulations and licensing process that allows for residents to keep chickens. In revising the existing ordinance, the amendment does not change requirements, location or other structural requirements.
The proposed ordinance does not change the maximum number of birds a resident could keep, which remains at four. However, it would prohibit the keeping of both ducks and chickens together in one coop, due to concerns related to animal health and transmission of viruses such as Highly Pathogenic Avian Flu (HPAI).
The coop size has to be four square feet per duck, with a maximum height of six feet.
